(ANSA) - UDINE - From June 2 it will be possible to leave Villach (Austria) and reach the Trieste Airport intermodal hub in Ronchi dei Legionari (Gorizia) and the Trieste railway station. The Italy-Austria cross-border connection service, managed by Ferrovie Udine-Cividale (FUC), will be extended experimentally, with two return trains and will be active on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Anyway, the daily Udine-Villach service will continue. The new service is added to the 54 trains that already connect the airport stop daily.

''This new railway connection to and from Trieste Airport is particularly significant, because it represents in an excellent way the benefits of intermodality for regional mobility and for the increase in the tourist incoming that our airport can enhance'', the DG of the airport Marco Consalvo said.

''The Trieste Airport stop will soon be a must for those who want to take the opportunity to extend the experience of the Alpe Adria cycle path to the coast'', highlighted the sole administrator of FUC, Maurizio Ionico, underlining the 'bike-friendly' connotation of the MiCoTra service, which ''in 2017, on the national route including the cycle route has recorded a growth of 7% in passengers and 16.7% in the bikes transported''. The Municipality of Ronchi has recently obtained the approval for the implementation of the direct connection of Trieste Airport to the bike path towards Fossalon-Grado. (ANSA).
