Road safety: Romania, Bulgaria with highest road death rate

In Estonia, Slovenia largest drop in fatalities in 2017

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - Romania and Bulgaria are the EU member countries with the highest road death rate per million inhabitants, the European Commission said today.

According to data from the Commission, both countries recorded a fatality rate much than the European average, with more than 80 deaths per million inhabitants. Romania registered 98 road deaths per million inhabitants in 2017, with an increase of 1% compared with 2016, while Bulgaria recorded 96 road deaths per million inhabitants, -4% between 2016 and 2017. However, both countries registered a significant drop in road deaths per million inhabitants between 2010 and 2017, -12% in Bulgaria and -19% in Romania. Between 2016 and 2017, Estonia (-32%) and Slovenia (-20%) reported the largest drop in fatalities.

"With an average of 49 road fatalities per one million inhabitants, European roads remained by far the safest in the world in 2017," the Commission noted. Last year, Sweden (25 deaths per million inhabitants), the United Kingdom (27), the Netherlands (31) and Denmark (32) recorded the best results in the EU.

The Commission said that 25,300 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the EU in 2017, 300 fewer than in 2016 (-2%) and 6,200 less than in 2010 (20%). (ANSA).
