(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The first train connecting the ports of Trieste, Italy, and Kiel, Germany, departed from the Italian city on Wednesday. It was the first step for the new trade link between Adriatic and Baltic seas, in line with the European corridor project. The objective is the transport of containers arriving and departing by sea from Turkey and Greece, with the Baltic market as source or destination. From the port of Kiel the containers will reach Scandinavian destinations as Göteborg, Malmö and Oslo.

The opening ceremony was held at Emt Terminal in the Port of Trieste. In his introductory greetings Francesco Parisi, President of Parisi Expeditions, said: "This train has a great symbolic value, connecting for the first time Adriatic, Baltic and Scandinavia." The managing director logistics operator turkish Ekol, Ahmet Mosul, said: "Today Istanbul and Trieste are linking northern, central and eastern Europe to eastern Mediterranean. The opportunities for Trieste are not limited to Middle East, but include also the Far East: the Italian port of the Northern Adriatic could become a platform to reach Europe" for countries like China or India. The turkish company has recently acquired a majority stake in Terminal Emt of Molo VI.
