Germany taken to EU Court for tolls for foreigners only

European Commission, German road tax is discriminatory

30 September, 10:09
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEPT. 29 - Germany will be taken to the European Court of Justice for the road tax imposed in fact to foreigners only. The EU Commission has decided to continue the infringement procedure opened a year and a half ago, since the German law on tolls for passenger cars and commercial vehicles includes a deduction of 100% for those registered in Germany, thus discriminating against non-German drivers. Moreover, the motorway stamp with a duration of less than a year, conceived specifically for cars registered outside Germany are, in some cases, ''disproportionately costly''. Despite the ''numerous appeals'' to German authorities since November 2014, the government ''have not yet responded to the concerns of the Commission'', which considers the German toll system, ''not in line'' with the EU treaties, since it violates the principle of non-Discrimination and free movement of goods and people.
