(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The European Commission approved 440 million euros of funds to help the modernisation of Romania's railway network in the framework of the Connecting Europe Facility (Cef) program. The funds will be used for modernising the Apata-Cata segment, which is a part of the Rhine-Danube corridor. The improvements should allow trains to travel at 160km/h along the segment.

The EU funds will cover 82% of the total investment, which amounts to 538 million euros, while the Romanian government will sustain the initiative with 98 million euros in 2016-2020 and with additional 167 million in 2021-2023. (ANSA).
