CEI, EDITS project workshop held In Trieste

To improve real time cross-border information on motorways

30 October, 13:08

(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Thirty five stakeholders from Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia have met in Trieste to discuss the possibilities of providing real time cross-border information to highway passengers in the target area. The meeting was held in the framework of the European Digital Traffic Infrastructure Network on Intelligent Transport Systems (EDITS) project, funded by the EU's Central Europe Programme.

In particular, a pilot project developed in the study area Austria-Italy-Slovenia was presented. The pilot focuses on the development of an interface for the exchange of data among the main motorway operators in the participating countries, providing service information to passengers, including real time notice of unforeseen events (accidents, closed roads, traffic jams or unfavourable weather conditions).

During the round table discussion which followed, the motorway operators and ministries of transport of Slovenia and Croatia stressed the need for cooperation amongst operators, police forces, ministries of transport and defence to ensure timely and proper implementation of procedures at regional, national and cross-border level.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure of Croatia presented the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding among motorway operators: DARS, ASFINAG, HAC, Autovie Venete and Hungarian motorways to ensure cooperation beyond the national borders in this sense. Autovie Venete, Italian motorway operator, presented their traffic re-routing example for passengers travelling from Italy (Trieste - Lisert) towards Slovenia (through Villesse) and Croatia during the Summer holidays. Suggestions for further developments came from the Trieste port authority, who spoke about the possibility to track trucks traveling on European roads, directed to the ports of Trieste, Koper and Rijeka to help prepare ship loads and customs procedures.

Together with the region Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Central European Initiative, based in Trieste, is responsible for all activities developed in the demonstration area Austria-Italy-Slovenia, including communication and dissemination of overall project results and the development of the pilot activity in the target area.
