Romania and Bulgaria planning 2 bridges across the Danube

Bucharest gave the green light to feasibility study

(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The Romanian government has given the green light to the signing of a memorandum of understanding with neighbouring Bulgaria, in order to start studying the feasibility of building two new bridges across the river Danube.

The announcement was made by Corneliu Calota, spokesman for the executive in Bucharest. As a press release issued by Romania's government pointed out, these projects could put in place links between the two river banks, between Calarasi and Silistra and between Nikopol and Turnu Magurele. Currently, there are just two bridges across the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria: the historical one, built in 1954, which is today more than obsolete, linking Ruse and Giurgiu, called ''The Friendship'' in the days of Socialism; the most recent and modern one, named ''New Europe'', which was first opened in 2013 and links Vidin to Calafat. Local media in Sofia have reported that Bulgaria is interested in a feasibility study and in the signing of a memorandum with Bucharest; it was stressed that the costs of a preliminary analysis will be supported by EU cross-border cooperation funding programmes for the period 2014-2020.
