(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Supporting transnational mobility of researchers from Central and Eastern Europe with particular attention to non-EU Member States was the main goal of the CEI Research Fellowship Programme (CERES), which lasted for 60 months as of April 2009. A total of 30 fellows were selected through four calls for application, 13 out of which were women and more than half from non-Eu countries. The researchers were hosted at Trieste's five centres of scientific excellence, including the International Centre for Theoretical Physics "Abdus Salam" (Ictp), the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Icgeb), the Cluster in Biomedicine (Cbm), International School for Advanced Studies (Sissa), and Elettra Sincrotrone. The fellows conducted research in a number of scientific disciplines, including physics, mathematics, genetics, biotechnology, neuroscience, nano-science, and bioinformatics.

Ukrainian researchers were the most numerous amongst the selected fellows (7), followed by Slovenia (5), Croatia (4), Poland (3), Bulgaria (3), Hungary (2), Serbia (2), Belarus (1), Moldova (1), Czech Republic (1) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (1).

"The transnational mobility of researchers from CEI Member Countries represents an important professional experience for individual researchers, as well as a contribution to the development of scientific research in Central and Eastern Europe, thanks to the established collaborations between EU and non-EU countries, thus opening the European Research Area (ERA) to third countries targeted by enlargement and neighbourhood policies", said the Special Advisor to CEI Secretary General, Giorgio Rosso Cicogna, for ANSA New Europe. "The CEI aims at renewing this very positive experience with a second phase of the CERES project, which will significantly contribute to the pilot activities of the CEI PRAISE Programme, which the organisation intends to launch over the next months", Rosso Cicogna added. The participants of the first phase of CERES programme realised 92 scientific pubblications, while ten of their research projects obtained additional funding. Out of 30 fellows, 14 got permanent job positions after the completion of the Programme, while 21 stated that their social security was improved thanks to participation in CERES.(ANSA).
