(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, 03 OCT - The President of the European
Council Donald Tusk, the designated president of the EU
Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the
European Parliament, David Sassoli, made today an appeal to the
European leaders for the opening of accession talks with North
Macedonia and Albania. "We believe that now is the time to open
accession talks with both countries", it is a test of the
Union's ability to deliver on its promises and look to the
future", they wrote in a joint letter.
The immediate start of negotiations for the entry of Skopje
and Tirana will have to be agreed at the European Council on
17-18th October.
"The EU stands before a strategic choice," the three
presidents wrote, stressing that Skopje and Tirana "did what we
asked them to do" with "significant effort from their citizens,
for whom the European perspective has been a great source of
motivation and determination".
Tusk, von der Leyene and Sassoli added that once the
negotiations have begun, "there is no guarantee of success"
because "there will be a lot of hard work on reforms along the
way" and "the membership will not happen overnight".(ANSA).
