Albania activates EU civil protection after earthquakes

To provide an emergency response

26 September, 18:54
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEP 26 - Today the Albanian authorities have activated the EU civil protection mechanism to receive support after the violent earthquakes and the consequent floods of recent days.

In the hours immediately following the earthquake, the EU had provided Albania with first aid supplies and relief items. The EU Commission announced today that Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Norway have offered their assistance through the EU mechanism.

The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Christos Stylianides, expressed his solidarity, assuring the Albanian government that "substantial EU support is already on its way", as well as a team of several experts will be deployed to facilitate the coordination of the in-coming assistance.(ANSA).
