Ukraine: Pope invites Greek-Catholic church to the Vatican

Meetings on 5 and 6 July, a ' signal of closeness'

(ANSA) - CITTA' DEL VATICANO, 4 MAG - ''Given that Ukraine is in a delicate and complex situation'', the Pope decided to invite the Major Archbishop, the members of the permanent Synod and the Metropolitans of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to Rome on 5 and 6 July 2019. ''Through this meeting, the Holy Father wishes to send a signal of his closeness to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church which carries out the pastoral service both at home and in various places all over the world'', reads a statement issued from the Holy See. The Superiors of the Dicasteries of the Roman Curia competent for Ukraine will also attend the meeting at the Vatican. ''Pope Francis wants everyone to personally present some important issues in the life of the Church in Ukraine and abroad'', explained the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, adding that ''in this way, our Church will participate in the elaboration of the vision and strategy of the Holy See in relation to the Ukrainian state and the Ukrainian community worldwide''. The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church also remarked that the meeting ''is an important signal of support for our Church and the beginning of a very serious commitment to guaranteeing appropriate development of the Church in terms of structures and pastoral activities in Ukraine and abroad''.
