Czech Republic: NGOs, EU should investigate Babis

Suspicion of a conflict of interest

19 September, 18:25
(ANSA) - PRAGUE, SEPT.19 - Transparency International - Czech Republic (Ti Rc) NGO urged today the European Commission to investigate the conflict of interest involving prime minister Andrej Babis. Billionaire Babis is suspected of continuing to control the Agrofert holding, through some trust funds, to which he had transferred his assets in February 2017. According to the NGO, the holding company continues to take advantage of the EU funding and Babis, being a prime minister, participates in the discussion of the European budget and therefore a conflict of interest cannot be ruled out. ''The case of Babis has a wider European dimension, the prime minister's conflict of interests threatens the interests of the Czech Republic in the negotiations on the EU budget'', David Ondracka, director of Ti Rc, told Ctk news agency. According to the economic daily newspaper (Hn), the Agrofert group received last year from the European funds the record amount of 2.1 billion crowns (about 84m euros). (ANSA).
