Ukraine: Sentsov, 100th day of hunger strike

Foreign Ministry calls on partners to put more pressure

21 August, 19:37
(ANSA) - UDINE, AUGUST 21 - Today is the 100th day since the beginning of the indefinite hunger strike of Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov, announced on May 14, 2018, demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners of the Kremlin, Ukrinform reported. Over the past 100 days, 42-year-old Sentsov lost about 30 kg.

Sentsov has problems with his kidneys and heart, Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Liudmyla Denisova said after talk with his lawyer.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Mariana Betsa, calls on international organizations and partners to increase pressure on Russia for his release.

"Human life is the highest value. We are urging the Russian Federation to immediately release Oleg. We are calling on our partners and international organizations to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to save Oleg Sentsov and release Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia," Betsa wrote on Twitter.

PEN International is planning to mark the 100th day of Oleg Sentsov's hunger strike with an event at Russia's Embassy in London on August 21.

In Kyiv, on August 21, the action "Solidarity with Oleg Sentsov" will be held near the Russian Embassy.

As Ukrinform reported, Sentsov was detained by Russian security services in Crimea in May 2014. He was sentenced to 20 years in a penal colony in Russia for alleged "plotting acts of terrorism." About 70 Ukrainian political prisoners are currently held in Russia and in the occupied Crimea. (ANSA).
