Montenegro: EU,'clear' direction, need to work on corruption

Djukanovic met Mogherini on first official visit to Brussels

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES - EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met with the President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, in Brussels and said that the European choice of Montenegro is "clear", now the government must prove its commitment to "the fight against corruption, and to protect fundamental rights, such as media freedom". Djukanovic was on his first official visit to Brussels after being elected last April.

Mogherini and Djukanovic also discussed Montenegro's role in regional stability. Podgorica has shown a "constant commitment" to the safety and stability of the Western Balkans' area, Mogherini underlined. High Representative confirmed the EU commitment to the European perspective of the country and the region, in the wake of "the momentum created this year, also through the Western Balkans strategy", published by the EU last February.

Montenegro is, together with Serbia, a 'frontrunner' in the accession negotiations with Brussels: so far, 30 chapters on 33 have been opened, 3 of which are provisionally closed. (ANSA).
