Bulgaria: 12% smoked illegal cigarettes in past 3 years

State budget lost between 56 and 82 million euro

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - Almost 12% of smokers in Bulgaria have used cigarettes bought illegally in the past three years, according to a research of the local Institute for Market Economics, Radio Bulgaria informed today.

According to the study, the state budget lost from 56 to 82 million euro only in 2017 because of the illicit market of cigarettes.

In 2017, according to data made public by the news agency BTA, the Bulgarian authorities have confiscated 37 million cigarettes and over 16,000 kg of tobacco and have increased controls at the borders checkpoints to fight smuggling. (ANSA).
