Frattini, a common road map between Moldova and Transnistria

EU funding for bridge, commercial route to Odessa

29 May, 18:22
(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 29 - The interconnection of telecommunications and the banking system between Moldova and Transnistria, the solution of open judicial issues, but also the strengthening of the bridge over the river Nistro, an important commercial link to Odessa were the most important topics on the conference table in the Moldova-Transnistria negotiations which are underway at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

''We have recorded important convergences between the parties and also with respect to the solutions proposed by the United States and Russia, as well as the EU'', explained Franco Frattini, special representative of the Italian Presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for the Filorussian separatist region of eastern Moldova.

''Anyway the path of these negotiations - added the former foreign minister - does not end today in Rome, we need more time ''. For that reason the OSCE Presidency has proposed a new 5 + 2 meeting (Russia, Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine and the OSCE, along with the European Union and the United States as observers), before the end of the year ''.

Among the important issues Frattini cited the proposal put forward by the European Union to finance a feasibility study to strengthen the bridge over the river Nistro. The financial commitment to consolidating the infrastructure, considered to be strategic for the transportation of goods, since it is part of the commercial route up to the Ukrainian city of Odessa, "which is however related - Frattini underline - to the free movement between the two sides of the bridge''.
