(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA, MAY 28 - The final seven days of the electoral campaign in Slovenia have begun today, ahead of early election next Sunday, towards the eighth legislature since the country gained its independence. On June 3, more than 1.7 million voters will have to choose their representatives out of 25 lists and 1,600 candidates.

According to polls issued this morning, most voters are still undecided. The conservative opposition party, the SDS led by former prime minister Janez Janša, is far ahead in the polls, with 24.2%. The party led by Marjan Sarec (LMS), the mayor of Kamnik who in November run for president along with Borut Pahor, is given 18.1%. According to forecasts, Social Democratic Party (SD) will be facing a decrease, totaling 12%, whereas the SMC (relative majority party), led by the outgoing prime minister Miro Cerar, remain stable at 9%. Among the parties that should enter the parliament are New Slovenia (NSi), which collects 8%, the DeSUS pensioners' party, and the United Left (Levica), that with 7.1% should exceed the threshold necessary to elect some members of parliament.
