Migrants: Greece, more than 1,650 crossed Evros in March

Despite high water and dangers, up from 262 one year ago

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - More than 1,650 migrants and refugees entered from Turkey to Greece by crossing the river Evros in March, the daily Kathimerini wrote on Friday.

Kathimerini said that the data of Greek police show that 1,658 were apprehended after crossing the Evros, up from the 262 detained in March 2017. Most of the people detained are Syrian and Iraqi families.

Crossing the Evros river is particularly dangerous in winter, when water levels are higher. Kathimerini noted that Greek authorities are concerned the number of arrivals by land could increase in the next months, when the river levels will be lower and the crossing easier. The Evros river marks the northeastern land border between Greece and Turkey.
