EU: Visegrad countries in favour of Schengen

All EU-27 should discuss on the EU's future

14 October, 12:47
(ANSA) - BRATISLAVA, OCT 13 - V4 countries (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia) want the Schengen project without internal border controls to continue and expect all 27 EU member countries to discuss the EU's future, except Great Britain, that decided to leave. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said at the Summit Host Country in Bratislava. ''We think that all 27 EU member countries should discuss about the EU's future, not only those that have adopted the euro currency, countries outside the eurozone shoud not be cut out'', Fico added.

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka underlined the need to maintain free movement in the Schengen area without internal controls. ''We are interested in returning to the original function of Schengen space. There is no reason to close internal borders'', Sobotka said, adding that the efforts made by some countries to strengthen internal border controls are ''step backwards'' and that it is necessary to protect the EU's external border. Premier V4 agreed with European Council President Donald Tusk that changes in the EU's mode of operation were established last year at the 27th Summit in Bratislava and later in Rome. V4 premiers expect to meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker this Wednesday. (ANSA).
