Sorry that he does not understand EC's role and expertise

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - Brussels defends the EC's Vice-President Frans Timmermans, who is coordinating the tense negotiations with Warsaw on the respect for the rule of law, from the attack by Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, according to whom his country is not in conflict with the EU or the Commission, but with Timmermans himself. ''We are sorry that the minister of a government does not understand the role, the structures and competences of the Commission, where all decisions are made collectively'', said European Commission spokeswoman Margaritis Schinas, who commented in an unusual way on a minister's statement, explaining that she was forced to do so by ''truth''. ''We would appreciate that the ministers who take the risk of commenting on our role - Schinas said - are well aware of the fact that the Commission is a guardian of the Treaties and its decisions are made in the interest of the 28 member countries'''. As for the discussion on the rule of law, she added, ''the Commission is impartial and ready to commit itself again, as soon as possible''. (ANSA).
