Balkans: EU, Macedonia represented by Zaev in Brussels

Tomorrow's meeting convened by Mogherini, on regional tensions

24 May, 09:09
(ANSA) - SKOPJE - Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, instead of the head of the transitional government, Emil Dimitriev, will represent Macedonia at the meeting that EU High Representative Federica Mogherini will have tomorrow in Brussels with premiers of the six Western Balkan countries, Skopje-based media reported today. The meeting was convened by the EU diplomacy head to take stock of the latest developments in the region, where ethnic tensions have grown in recent times. Zaev, leader of the Social Democratic Opposition, was given some days ago by Macedonian President Gjorgje Ivanov the mandate to form a new government.

Consultations with the Albanian minority parties are in progress and by the end of the month Zaev has pledged to appear in parliament with a programme and a list of ministers. Tomorrow's working dinner with Federica Mogherini in Brussels will be attended by many premiers: Serbia's PM Aleksandar Vucic, Albania's Edi Rama, Kosovo's Isa Mustafa, Montenegro's Dusko Markovic and Bosnia's Denis Zvizdic. Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano convened a meeting with counterparts from the Western Balkans tomorrow in Rome to talk about the situation in the region, also in view of the Trieste summit scheduled for July 12.
