6 arrested over grenade attack on Kosovo parliament

Street rallies degenerated into clashes with police

31 August, 12:15

(ANSA-AP) - PRISTINA - Kosovo police have arrested six opposition supporters for allegedly throwing hand grenades at the parliament building.

The Aug. 4 attack damaged a courtyard but injured nobody.

Tuesday's statement from prosecutors says the six already have admitted their involvement in "planning, organizing and executing the attack," when a few hundred opposition supporters rallied outside parliament to protest Kosovo's agreement last year with neighboring Montenegro on joint recognition of their border.

A Pristina court is expected to rule within two days on whether the six should stand trial on charges of committing violence against state institutions.

Over the past year, opposition lawmakers inside the parliament chamber have tossed tear gas canisters, blown whistles and thrown water bottles to disrupt proceedings. Their supporters' street rallies routinely have degenerated into clashes with police.
