24 June, 18:55

(ANSA) - ROME - President Sergio Mattarella said Friday Italy "intends to reaffirm the historic validity of the European Union and its importance for the future of our youth" in the wake of Britain's vote to leave the EU. Mattarella spoke in Ljubljana on the margins of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Slovenia.

"We respect the results of the British referendum, albeit with regret," Mattarella said.

"I am here with the presidents of the Austrian, German and Croatian republics to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Slovenia's foundation. We are here with countries that are our friends. Especially today, we must stress how much we are bound by our common European destiny".
