Migration: Serbia, Hungary and Austria sign border agreement

Focusing on 'Balkan route', summit

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - The interior ministers of Serbia, Austria and Hungary on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen border control, amid rising levels of undocumented migrants attempting to cross into Europe through the Balkans.

The document - signed in Budapest by the ministers Nebojsa Stefanovic, Johanna Mikl-Leitner and Sandor Pinter - calls for joint police patrols along the borders, an intensification of measures against human trafficking and special contact points between the three countries involved. The three ministers asked the EU to increase funding for Frontex and to focus more on migratory flows in the Balkan area and not only the Mediterranean region. The signing occurred in Budapest, where on Wednesday a meeting is scheduled between the Hungarian and Serbian governments.

One of the themes of the talks is the migration emergency and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Ordban's announcement that a wall will be built along the border with Serbia to deal with the growing migrant flows. Another issue to be discussed is the plan to build a Chinese-funded high-speed rail line between Budapest and Belgrade. (ANSA).
