(ANSA) - STRASBOURG, JANUARY 16 - The rule of law in Poland
and Hungary has deteriorated. This is what MEPs wrote in a
resolution calling for necessary, objective and transparent
hearings, with concrete recommendations to the Member States,
and the formal inclusion of Parliament in hearings before
national authorities. Parliament said today that the hearings
which are underway with Poland and Hungary have not led these
countries to align themselves with the founding values of the
European Union. In the resolution adopted with 446 votes in
favor, 178 against and 41 abstentions, MEPs underlined that
reports and statements from the Commission and international
bodies, such as the UN, the OSCE and the Council of Europe,
indicate that "the situation both in Poland and Hungary has
deteriorated since the activation of Article 7 (1) of the Treaty
on European Union." (ANSA).
