EU pushes progress in Russia and Ukraine gas talks

Moscow and Kiev's Ministers tomorrow in Brussels for a 3rd round

18 September, 19:54
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 18 - The European Union pushes to find as soon as possible an agreement on gas supplies between Russia and Ukraine, defining the tariffs, volumes, duration and legal framework of the supply. A third round of trilateral gas talks between the EU, Moscow and Kiev will take tomorrow afternoon in Brussels. The existing contract between Moscow and Kiev for the supply of gas will expire at the end of 2019 and EU wants to prevent Russia from definitively closing the passage of hydrocarbons through Ukraine, leaving the Ukrainian citizens without supplies in winter.

"Making progress" on the agreement "would send a strong positive signal to the market and to consumers before the winter season," EU Energy Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said ahead of the meeting. The trilateral talks have been going on since 17th July 2018. Both the delegation of Ukraine headed by Energy Minister Oleksiy Orzhel and the delegation of Russia headed by the Russian counterpart Alexander Novak, will attend the meeting.

The CEOs of Naftogaz and Gazprom, the two national gas companies, will also be present.
