(ANSA) - BERLIN, July 17 - Annegret Kramp Karrembauer was
appointed as Defense Minister in a ceremony at the Presidency of
the German Republic, at Bellevue Castle. The inauguration
ceremony was presided over by Berlin mayor Michael Muller as
first vice president of the Bundesrat, acting as head of state
(both the president of the Republic Frank Walter Steinmeier and
the president of the Bundestag were on vacation), and attended
by Chancellor Angela Merkel and the newly elected EC president
Ursula von der Leyen, who handed over the power to Kramp
Karrembauer.
The short ceremony took place with the three women sitting,
to avoid the recurrence of Angela Merkel's tremors. According to
the German Constitution, Kramp Karrembauer, who after the
ceremony attended a handover meeting at the Ministry of Defense,
in order to take on the full power (including that of
commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces in peacetime) has yet to
take her oath before the Bundestag, and this will happen no
sooner than a week. (ANSA).
