Tusk calls on Bosnian Presidents to work together to join EU

EU Commissioner asks for reforms

30 January, 19:06

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, JAN 30 - European Council President Donald Tusk called on the three members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency, Milorad Dodik, Sefik Dzaferovic, and Zeliko Komsic, to work together to speed up the path of the country towards the EU. "The future of Bosnia-Herzegovina is in a united Europe. But the path and speed depend first and foremost on the country's leadership coming together for the common good of their citizens", Tusk wrote on Twitter after a meeting with the Bosnian Presidency.

Sarajevo must adopt "concrete reforms" and avoid "divisive rhetoric or any initiatives hampering the country's EU path", the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, pointed out.

During today's meeting, the Commissioner urged the Presidents to send a reply to Brussels' questions "as soon as possible". The European Commission will then formulate an opinion to give Bosnia and Herzegovina a candidate status. "The future Commission Opinion will be a comprehensive roadmap for deep reforms, which need to be adopted and implemented urgently, notably those in the field of rule of law and fundamental rights, where there are clear shortcomings at all levels", Hahn added.(ANSA).
