Focus on collaboration, EU, Balkans, migrants

28 January, 12:24

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JAN 28 - Slovenian president Borut Pahor's official visit to Serbia today and tomorrow will focus on strengthening bilateral political and economic relationship, prospects for Serbia's integration into the EU, the situation in the Balkan region, with particular regard to migrants and security. Pahor was welcomed this morning by the Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic, with whom he held talks. The two heads of state will speak at a bilateral economic forum and Pahor will give a speech to the Serbian parliament. Slovenia and Croatia are the only countries of the former Yugoslavia that have joined the European Union so far.

Ljubljana, unlike Zagreb, is also part of the eurozone and the Schengen area. The Slovenian government has repeatedly reiterated its support for the European path of Serbia, since there is no dispute between the two countries at the moment, whereas some disputes still exist between Belgrade and Zagreb, as a consequence of the 1991-1995 war. Serbia is Slovenia's tenth largest trading partner and trade is worth over 1 billion euros.

Pahor is paying his first official to Serbia after his re-election in November 2017. He had already been to Belgrade in 2014, the first visit by a serving Slovenian president to the country. (ANSA).
