EU Commissioner Hahn on mission to Kosovo and Albania

Meetings with Prime Ministers Haradinaj and Rama

17 January, 14:57
(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, JANUARY 17 - EU Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn will visit Kosovo and Albania this afternoon to take stock of the reform efforts on the two countries' path towards the European Union.

Hahn will firstly travel to Pristina to meet the Kosovar Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, he then will move to Tirana and talk to the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. "It is of utmost importance now to pursue the reforms with determination which are necessary to move forward and toward the European Union path", Hahn's cabinet diplomats say.

The two countries are experiencing different situations.

Albania awaits for the approval of the 27 Member States, which is due to be given next June, to start the accession negotiations with the EU. In the meanwhile, the government led by Edi Rama is carrying out a reform process in the judiciary.

Conversely, Kosovo's progress is blocked by tensions with Serbia. The high-level dialogue between the two countries' Presidents, facilitated by the EU, is currently stuck after Pristina's decision to introduce 100% customs tariffs on imports from Belgrade and Sarajevo.(ANSA).
