(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 17 DIC - EU backed a financing package for Serbia worthing 97 million euros to support reforms in the country, especially in the fields of the environment, energy and the rule of law. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn and Serbian Minister for EU Integration Jadranka Joksimovic announced the signature of the three deals today in Brussels.

The loans are part of the EU Pre-Accession Instrument (Ipa) 2017.

"The largest part of the package, worth € 49.6 million, will finance the interconnector for the transport of gas between Serbia and Bulgaria", one of the "most important" projects to "support energy diversification in Serbia ", said Joksimovic.

A second part of the financing, worth approximately 28 million euros, will be used to carry out other environmental projects in several Serbian municipalities, including the construction of two wastewater treatment plants and the management of solid waste. The signature "ensures that Serbian citizens can have access to clean water" and "enjoy the same benefits as European citizens", Hahn pointed out. The remaining funds will be used in actions against organized crime and cybercrime. (ANSA).
