Albanian students continue protest to halve tuition fees

Some have hinted they may start a hunger strike

08 December, 19:00
(AP-ANSA) - TIRANA - Public university students are continuing to protest in the Albanian capital, turning down offers to negotiate with the government unless their demands are met. Students on Saturday defied the rain and increased their demands, also turning down support from the political opposition. They have blocked a main street in front of the Education Ministry, and some of their parents have joined them.

The main demand is a halving of tuition fees, which for bachelor courses range from 20,000 to 45,000 leks ($180-410) per year.

Some students have hinted they may start a hunger strike. Dec. 8 is considered a national holiday in Albania, marking the date in 1990 when a student protest brought down the communist regime.
