Italy's stance clear on passports - Conte tells Kurz

Many people in Alto Adige want dual nationality says Chancellor

(ANSA) - Rome, September 18 - Premier Giuseppe Conte said Tuesday that he reiterated Italy's opposition to Vienna's plan to give a double passport to Alto Adige's German and Ladin speakers during a meeting with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

"I had the opportunity to express to Kurz that Italy has a clear position on the passports and dual nationality," Conte told a joint press conference with Kurz after the leaders met in Rome.

On Monday that Italian foreign ministry said Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi would not go to Vienna for one of the regular bilateral meetings proposed by the Austrian foreign ministry because mutual trust has been undermined by Vienna's double-passport plan.

While on his way to Rome for Tuesday's meeting, Kurz told reporters that "Italy has no reason to get upset" about the plan. "Many people in South Tyrol want the double passport and this is part of the (Austrian) government's programme," he said.

"We have always made it clear that we will act in agreement with Rome".(ANSA).
