Montenegro steps up Albania border control

After 2,800 irregular migrants enter since January

27 August, 20:55
(ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, AUGUST 27 - Montenegro authorities have stepped up checks and surveillance of the border with Albania, from which over 2,800 migrants have entered the country since January. Local media report that for the past week divisions of the Montenegro army have been deployed on the border with Albania to support police forces and prevent further arrivals of migrants and refugees. Over the past few months, a new 'Balkan route' has been activated by migrants from the Middle East, Turkey and Greece, a flow that instead of heading towards Macedonia and Serbia - as occurred during the 2015-2016 crisis - seek to reach Western Europe through Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. From there they try to cross into the European Union by entering Croatia or Slovenia to then reach Austria, Germany or Italy. (ANSAmed).
