Bulgaria: concern over outbreaks of goat plague in the south
Thousands of animals killed. EU experts ready to investigate
17 July, 16:40Outbreaks of sheep plague were initially recorded in the Yambol region on June 21, the first case in Bulgarian territory and in the EU, after those recorded in neighbouring Turkey, but it is not clear how the epidemic has reached Bulgaria. Investigations are underway. The sheep plague is not harmful to humans if meat and milk are subjected to thermal processing, but it is very dangerous for goats and sheep. An extraordinary meeting of the Parliament's Bureau to discuss the situation is scheduled for today. Experts from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety will arrive in Sofia today to carry out an inspection. (ANSA).
