(ANSA) - BERLIN, JUNE 15 - Germany's contribution to Nato
will be "very strong", probably in Afghanistan, and the
resources allocated to defence will reach 1.5% of GDP by 2020,
said chancellor Angela Merkel during a meeting with the
Secretary General of Nato Jens Stoltenberg, today in Berlin.
Just a few weeks ahead of the Nato summit scheduled for July,
the chancellor underlined the big and recent investments made by
Germany in defence but recognized that it is improbable to reach
the 2% of GDP target by 2024.
German chancellor, just a week ago in parliament, slowed down
military spending, clarifying that 1.5% of GDP is likely to be
reached in 2024, whereas today the same percentage was shifted
to 2020. The chancellor's position then aroused harsh criticism,
especially within the Cdu-Csu Union. (ANSA).
