Merkel, EU countries should look beyond their own backyard
Citing Prodi and De Gasperi, goodwill essential to future peace

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 12 - EU countries should ''look beyond their own backyard; despite the differences in the European Union we can feel as safe as we actually we are in this Basilica'', German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today in Assisi.
''Very often - she added - we lose sight of how important our values and our basic convictions are. As EC president Prodi said several times that if we do not know how to give Europe a soul we will lose this game''.
De Gasperi, Adenauer and Schuman were convinced that ''a peaceful future will be possible only if the EU becomes a community and achieving this goal is essential today. European integration is a project based on peace and we are not keeping this in mind every day''. (ANSA).
