Kosovo: EU thanks prosecutor Schwediman for "excellent work"

EEAS issued a statement following the announcement of retirement

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 15 FEB - The European Union thanks the Specialist Prosecutor David Schwendiman "for his excellent work" to investigate and prosecute war crimes which occurred during and in the aftermath of the conflict in Kosovo in the late '90s, a EEAS Spokesperson said in a statement after the American prosecutor announced today he will leave the post at the end of March because his three-year term as a U.S. State Department foreign service officer is coming to an end and cannot be extended.

"It is particularly important that the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor's Office are able to continue to do their work independently", the spokesperson pointed out. They are "an important demonstration of Kosovo's commitment to the rule of law, which in turn is a core element for Kosovo's progress on the EU integration path".

The relevant procedures for the nomination of Mr Schwendiman's successor will be launched "swiftly, according to the law, to ensure seamless continuity of work", EU said.(ANSA).
