From Central and Eastern Europe 24-29 October

(ANSA) - ROME - Selected among 3,571 titles, 342 films will be screened at the 21st Jihlava International Documentary Festival, the largest event in the sector in Central and Eastern Europe, scheduled for 24-29 October, including 70 debuts, focusing on political issues and personal introspection; the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague is also supporting the event.

This edition is plentiful, with new competition sections - the number increased from 7 to 10 -, including those dedicated to testimonials (Politics, Knowledge, Nature), whereas the non-competition sections include, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, a retrospective dedicated to French director and anthropologist Jean Rouch presented by his wife Jocelyn.

"A hundred years - said the Festival director, Marek Hovorka - have passed since the Great October Socialist Revolution.

Therefore, its icon, Lenin, and his representation in the documentaries produced in the 20th century will be subjected to a detailed analysis" . The festival will also feature a portrait of the Brazilian phenomenon Udigrudi, and a conference 'From Ronald to Donald' will be included in the section which is called 'American Year'.

"Film festivals today offer real distribution opportunities - Hovorka added, describing the event -, along with the most complete selection of titles and an unforgettable atmosphere: they open up a free space, allowing the audience to make discoveries. While film and TVmakers have to stay safe, festivals offer space for experimental movies, burning issues, and new talented authors, and for this reason we're looking for kinds of movies we've never seen before".

Italy takes part in the festival with seven documentaries (competitive sections): two documentaries, 'Una storia volatile' by Carla Vestroni and 'Al di là dell'uno' by Anna Marziano, will be screened in the main section, 'Opus Bonum', for the best international documentary; among others, 'Mon amour mon ami' by Adriano Valerio and 'Stop and Go' by Giovanni Pannico and Ralph Kronauer in the 'Short Joy' section, 'Cinecittà Babilonia' by Marco Spagnoli in the 'A Testimony on Knowledge' section, 'Dusk Chorus - based on Fragments of Extinction' by Alessandro D'Emilia and Nika Saravanja in the 'A Testimony on Nature' section and 'The Sailor' by Giovanni Giaretta in the 'Fascinations' section.
