Fixed and mobile Internet has evolved significantly in terms of both connections, structure, and traffic. Thus, the number of fixed broadband Internet access connections increased from 14,000, which was reported at the end of 2003 to 4.4 million at the end of 2016.

The number of mobile users (active SIM cards) amounted to 22.9 million at the end-2016, more than three times higher than in 2003, when there were 7 million users.

Telecom industry continues to have a significant contribution to Romania's GDP, both in 2003 and in 2016, representing 3.9 percent and 2 percent respectively. (ANSA).
