Books: EU prizes for new writers, half winners from Balkans

From Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - Emerging writers from Balkan states who were awarded the European Literature Prize are 6 out of 12 winners. Rudi Erebara (Albania), Ina Vultchanova (Bulgaria), Kallia Papadaki (Greece), Aleksandar Beanovi (Montenegro), Darko Tuevljakovi (Serbia) and Sine Erguen (Turkey) will be given the prize on May 23 at the official event in Brussels. Bianca Bellova (Czech Republic), Halldora K. Thoroddsen (Iceland), Osvalds Zebris (Latvia), Walid Nabhan (Malta), Jamal Ouariachi (Netherlands) and Sunjeev Sahota (United Kingdom) will receive a prize of 5,000 euros.

This award, organized by European associations representing books, writers and publishers with the support of the EC, has been awarded since 2009 to the new literary talents from all countries participating in the Creative Europe programme for Culture. ''We recognize the importance of the European book industry and we want to help authors, publishers, translators and sellers reach new readers across borders and give them more choice'', commented the EU Commissioner for Culture and education, Tibor Navracsics, who congratuled the winners.
