Poland, Jewish community buries old Torah in ancient ritual

The 74th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising

(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Warsaw's Jewish community buried old damaged Torah scrolls from pre-war times on Wednesday, commemorating the 74th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. According to The Times of Israel it's an ancient ritual that some believe had not been carried out since the war.

Poland's chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich said that the ritual was "about remembering that for us the Torah scroll is so important, is so holy, that when it's no longer usable we bury it as if it was a human being." The community buried fragments of the scrolls at the capital's Jewish cemetery. (ANSA)
