Slovenians in Austria protest aganist Carinthia on language

Reform promoted by OVP wants German as official speak

16 February, 17:47

(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA - It has been quite resounding the reaction of all the Slovenian political parties to the decision of the Carinthian state government, the southernmost of all the Austrian state, to revise the 7th article of the Austrian State Treaty imposing both German and Slovenian as official languages in the ethnically mixed area. Instead, the reform promoted by the Austrian People's Party (OVP) intends to specify that German is the official language. Ljubljana has criticized the proposal, especially after the president of the Council of Carinthian Slovenes (NSKS), Valentin Inzko, who also acts as the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, declared that Slovenian was one the official languages already in the Austro-Hungarian empire. At the same time the President of the Slovenian parliament and vice president of the SMC party, the Prime minister's party, Milan Brglez, put the topic on top of today's parlamentary discussions in order to determine the necessary course of actions, while the Minister for foreign affairs minister, Karel Erjavec, will meet the representatives of the NSKS on Monday after today's coalition meeting.

Meanwhile, the protests of the civil society in Carinthia continue, led by Slovenian university students and representatives of the academic world. (ANSA).
