Bulgaria: President-elect will dissolve parliament in 1 week

Radev took oath of office in National Assembly

20 January, 10:49
(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 20 GEN - Bulgaria's President-elect Rumen Radev said he will dissolve the Parliament in a week's time, Reuters reported. Radev won presidential elections on a ticket backed by the socialist opposition party, triggering the collapse of the center-right government. Radev took the oath of office as Bulgaria's president in the National Assembly in Sofia, with his formal inauguration as head of state scheduled for Sunday.

"You have one more week," he told lawmakers, indicating that the election was likely to be held on March 26. During the speech some Mps walked out of the National Assembly.

The new president will dissolve the current National Assembly, appointing a caretaker government.

The speech by Radev, whose attitudes to Russia are being carefully watched, noted that Bulgaria was a member of the European Union and of Nato. "I am convinced that united Europe should be preserved at all costs", Radev affirmed. (ANSA).
