'Insult to victims' otherwise, says Tieger

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - The lead prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Alan Tieger, called Wednesday for the Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic to be sentenced to life in jail.

The leader of the Bosnian Serb forces is charged with genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the 1992-1995 conflict in Bosnia.

Tieger said at the end of his closing remarks that: ''It would be an insult to victims living and dead and an affront to justice to impose any sentence less than the severest available under the law - a life sentence''.

The case is the last major one of the UN-established tribunal. (ANSA).
