Migrants: Slovenia, new fences along border with Croatia

In anticipation of massive arrivals

22 October, 12:30
(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA, OCT. 22 - Slovenia has begun setting up metal fences along two border crossings with Croatia in order to be ready, in anticipation of a new massive migrant influx from the Middle East, to close its borders, Sta news agency reported.

These are the two most important and busiest border crossings between the two countries, Obrezje and Gruskovje, both not far from the Croatian capital Zagreb. These two border crossings, Slovenian Interior Undersecretary Andrej Turn said, ''we will be closed'' in the event of new arrivals through the so-called Balkans route. So far, along the borders between the two countries, the Slovenian police have placed 183km of barbed wire and other ''technical barriers'', most of them during the massive migrant influx which occurred between September 2014 and March 2015, when about one million refugees reached Germany and other Western countries. These new 'barriers', according to Turn, are part of a plan that aims to ''protect the local population and their property'', and was prepared as a precaution in the past months. (ANSA).
