Ukraine: Aquileia Forum, a road map to a stable peace

Zannier (OSCE), 'an issue to be put into wider context'

21 October, 16:39

(ANSA) - UDINE - ''A road map to understand who will be able to transform the ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in a stable peace, and how and when he will be able to do it''. The ambassador of Ukraine to Italy Yevhen Perelygin suggested to adopt this strategy during the second panel of the 12th Forum of the Euroregion Aquileia, which is going on in Udine until October 22. During the Forum, a difficult dialogue between Ukraine and Russia took place, the OSCE Secretary general Lamberto Zannier playing the moderator role.

''Russia - Perelygin added - must commit to ending the military occupation of the Crimean peninsula and interrupting the supply of military equipment to the separatists: this is the only way to be on track with the Minsk Protocol''.

Alexander Lukashevich, permanent ambassador of the Russian Federation to the OSCE, has a very different opinion. ''There is no occupation - he said -, we are talking about the right of a people to self-determination and, moreover, there is no evidence of the presence of Russian soldiers in the Ukrainian territory. We need - he added - a wider geopolitical vision which is able to think about Europe as a whole, beyond the countries that make up the Union. ''This issue should be seen in a much more extended context of relations between the West and Russia'', the OSCE Secretary General said. ''The fact that the conflict is 'hybrid' in the sense that there are not two easily identifiable opposing sides - he added - is another sign of high tension and there is a risk of accidents. The OSCE is strongly committed to monitoring the elections in the Donbass and I have already had a meeting with Ukrainian President Poroshenko to evaluate the deployment of observers''.(ANSA).
