Bosnia: new international appeal against referendum

Italy and the EC signed, but Russia didn't

21 September, 19:17

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEPT. 21 - ''Once again we call upon the authorities of the Republika Srpska (RS) not to hold the referendum'', because ''no referendum can change the final and binding nature of a decision made by the Constitutional Court''.

Countries that are part of the Steering Board of the Peace ImplementationCouncil (PIC) , including Italy, the European Commission and the EU Presidency have made such a request.

Only Russia has dissociated from the umpteenth official stance of the international community against the referendum scheduled for Sunday, ordered by the chairman of the Rs so as to institutionalize the National Day, January 9, celebrated by the Serb-majority entity of Bosnia-Herzegovina so far, but declared unconstitutional by the High Court Bosnian.

''No institution or authority in Bosnia-Herzegovina can act outside the constitutional order'', wrote the Ambassadors of the Steering Board of the PIC, who wanted to ''firmly condemn'' the allegations ''threatening stability and security, and challenging the territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina''.
