Pope urges Europe to renew ties with Christian roots

Message for 14th Inter-Christian Symposium in Thessaloniki

30 August, 15:08

(ANSA) - VATICAN CITY - The objective of the 14th Inter-Christian Symposium, which is taking place today and tomorrow in Thessaloniki (Greece), is to re-evangelize Christians who have lost the bond with their faith. Pope Francis sent a message to the participants through Cardinal Kurt Koch, head of the Pontifical Council for PromotingChristian Unity, the Vatican Radio reported. The pope speaks of those baptised who live as if God did not exist: quite a widespread phenomenon in Europe. According to Pope Francis, the people ''are not aware of the gift of faith they received, do not experience the consolation and are not fully involved in the life of the Christian community''. In order to face this issue, Francis underlines ''the need for a re-evangelization of the Christian communities in Europe'', which is the main focus of the 14th Inter-Christian Symposium. As for this meeting, the Pope described as praiseworthy ''the initiative'' promoted by the Franciscan Institute of Spirituality of the Pontifical University Antonianum and the Department of Theology of the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
