(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Bulgaria granted citizenship to 62,049
foreigners over the last five years, Justice Minister Ekaterina
Zaharieva said in a written response to the Parliament. The
majority (60,194 persons) obtained the citizenship due to
Bulgarian origins (mainly Macedonian, Moldavian and Ukrainian
citizens), while the remaining 1,855 became Bulgarians by
naturalisation. Around 6% of the requests for citizenship were
not approved.
Ukrainians were the most numerous group to have obtained the
Bulgarian citizenship in 2014, followed by Russians and
Moldavians. According to Eurostat, Bulgaria approved citizenship
to 900 persons in 2014. (ANSA).
